It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of David Polefrone, a remarkable young man whose life touched so many in so many meaningful ways. David, age 26, left us on May 2, 2026, in Washington, D.C., leaving behind a legacy of love, brilliance, and kindness that will continue to inspire all who knew him. His departure is a great loss, but the impact of his life will ripple through generations, leaving behind memories that will be cherished forever.
David was born to Amy and Phillip Polefrone in South Carolina. From an early age, he demonstrated a curious mind and an insatiable desire to learn about the world around him. His academic journey took him to the University of Maryland, where he majored in economics and chemistry. During his time there, David was not only a dedicated student but also a vibrant leader, involved in Student Government, parliamentary debate, and the prestigious Omicron Delta Kappa society. His leadership and enthusiasm made him a respected figure among peers, and he graduated with honors, earning recognition for his academic excellence.
After completing his undergraduate studies, David continued his pursuit of knowledge at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his M.S. in Organic Chemistry. His passion for science and discovery knew no bounds, and he approached each subject with intense focus and curiosity. Recently, David had moved to Washington, D.C., embarking on an exciting new chapter of his life. He had begun a promising career in data science, where he was applying his analytical skills to innovative projects, eager to make a difference in the world.
Beyond his academic and professional achievements, David was a truly brilliant and engaging soul. He was interested in a wide array of subjects, studying each with dedication and passion. But what truly set David apart was his loving and generous heart. He loved his family and friends fiercely, always encouraging those around him to grow and flourish. David believed deeply in people and had an innate ability to lift spirits with his kindness, big hugs, engaging conversations, and friendly demeanor. His manners and warmth made everyone feel special.
David’s family, including his loving parents Phil and Amy, his sister Joy and brother-in-law Nick, grandparents Jim and Judy, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and nephews, hold his memory close. He now joins his grandparents Joe and Mae and other loved ones in heaven. David’s love for his family and friends was boundless, and he cherished every relationship. His friends from college, graduate school, and everywhere he lived became like family to him, and he made friends easily, young and old alike.
A memorial service to honor David’s life will be held on Friday, June 5, 2026, at Naples United Church of Christ in Naples, Florida. An additional service will be held later this summer in Ellicott City, Maryland, with details to be announced by his family. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to organizations meaningful to David’s passions, including the Cornell School of Ornithology, The American Legion, Omicron Delta Kappa at the University of Maryland, The Henrietta Lacks Foundation, or The Bird Gardens of Naples, Florida.

As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate his incredible life, his big heart, and his unwavering spirit. We find solace in Philippians 4:7, “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds.” David’s spirit is soaring above us, forever present in our hearts.
